Barnet Alliance for Public Services statement

We champion democratically accountable, high quality public services. We reject the idea that public services should be cut in order to bail out the banks.

We reject Barnet council’s plans for mass outsourcing of its services – no to easyCouncil!

We oppose privatisation and cuts to public services, whether NHS, education, or local authority, and will resist them.

We oppose free schools and the extension of academies.

We demand that Barnet council reverses its recent decision to pay the council leader and cabinet members higher allowances.

Over 8,000 people united and held hands around Roscommon Hospital to show that people would defend their public service Saturday 14th August 2010.
Marchers, led by the Castlerea Brass band snaked around the GAA grounds, over the road and into the grounds of the hospital. Staff and patients waved on at the march until the march doubled back on itself at the entrance, with many more still waiting to join the symbolic holding hands around the hospital. Organisers had planned maybe one row of people doing this but the crowd was at least ten deep around the hospital.

There was a clear commitment to the local hospital as scores of people told Trade Union TV how staff at Roscommon hospital had saved their lives or the lives those near and dear to them. The threatened government cuts were a step too far for so many people on the march, watch people’s views expressed in the video for more.
Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, Mayor of Roscommon, tapped into the energy and anger of the march saying nothing was impossible if you believed it. He scoffed at the pathetic solutions ‘offered’ by those in the HSE. There is only one solution for Roscommon hospital and that’s to keep it open, well funded and resourced for the fullest of lives for the people in Roscommon.

Thousands have protested all over ireland to save local health services which have been savaged by Fianna Fáil/Green Party / Mary Harney rightwing attacks on public services since the start of 2010, from Dingle to Letterkenny.

Time for all those campaigns to join up and say that health is a national issue!

Friday 24th September 2010
18.00-21.00 Evening discussion meeting on international struggles around the cuts agenda, with guest speaker Ian Angus from Canada ‘Climate & Capitalism’ as well as speakers on Ireland, Palestine and Eastern Europe.

Saturday 25th September 2010
10.00 – 17.00 All day discussion (lunch available) on building alliances against the cuts followed by continuing social discussion, with food after 17.00.

Contributors including Gregor Gall (Professor of Industrial Relations and Morning Star contributor), John McDonnell MP (LRC Chair) and Matt Wrack (FBU) .

Saturday’s sessions will include:-

• Building practical unity against the cuts.
• The nature and effect of cuts on different aspects of our lives (eg benefits, housing, services, jobs).
• What cuts we do want (military, eco-destruction, attacks on civil liberties)?
• Arguments for the alternative to cuts (green jobs, free public transport) and the alternative society we want.

We know what impact the recession has had on the 1000 richest multimillionaires in Britain – their wealth has increased by nearly a third, up £77.265 billion in the last year according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List. The size of the planned public sector cuts is a fraction of these new acquired riches.

However, we also know that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat government has absolutely no intention of making the richest 10% of the population contribute fairly to the gradual reduction of our national debt – which even now is still proportionately lower than the US, Canada, Japan, Italy, France and even Germany.

Instead, we face huge, immediate and unnecessary cuts in public spending and either the reduction or closure of services in some of the most economically deprived areas of the country, including boroughs like Newham.

But what will these cuts actually mean in practice? What impact will local people suffer when cuts hit services for children and young people, or for people needing advice? What are the implications for those who are in substandard housing, suffering domestic violence or who are dependent upon social care? What are the consequences for council and NHS staff, many of whom are also local residents?

Highlighting the impact of cuts on local people and understanding how they affect everyone is the first step towards acting to oppose them – together. So come along on 13 October and join the debate.

Good public services, and a universal welfare system, are central to what’s good about Haringey and our lives. We all need good health care, schools and nurseries, community centres, well-run parks and libraries, social services, affordable housing, safe and attractive neighbourhoods, decent jobs, and an adequate and reliable income for unwaged people. Previous generations fought hard to win such improvements.

Devastating – and unjustifiable

The Council estimates it will have to make £60m cuts over the next 4 years and the NHS faces similar threats. If not countered, the cuts will be
devastating for all our local communities, for those working in the local public sector and other jobs, for many vital public, voluntary and community projects, services and facilities – and for the most vulnerable, including those reliant on housing and incapacity benefits.

This is a wealthy country, but the Government has chosen to take away £billions of public funds from essential public services whilst propping up
greedy and irresponsible banks with public money. Our public services are entitled to adequate resources and improvements!

Doing nothing is not an option

Recently the Government backed down after 5,000 people marched to save the Whittington Hospital. Many others have started to object and protest about proposed cuts affecting their services and jobs. Alliances and campaigns are springing into action all over the country. Doing nothing is not an option!

What can we do together?
Together we can reverse the cuts programme if we take action and say NO. We call on all Haringey’s residents, community groups, workers, and trades unions to link together and stand up for what’s right.

The Haringey Alliance for Public Services (HAPS) has been set up as a network open to all those living or working in Haringey. We support
opposition to the running down, closure or privatisation of any local public services, and support campaigning for improvements. We meet regularly, and promote communication and co-ordination, mutual aid and solidarity among all those affected. Why not get involved?

The RMT transport union has tabled a motion for the TUC Congress in Manchester in September which sets out a blueprint for a co-ordinated trade union and community fight back against the cuts programme and the “class warfare” of the ConDem Government.

The RMT motion calls on the trade union movement to;

· Call an immediate summit of affiliates to discuss the sole issue of how we can best coordinate industrial action to defend jobs, pensions and conditions

· Consider convening a urgent conference of affiliates and representatives of users of publicly funded services and the welfare state to establish a broad alliance against the cuts

· Organise an urgent national demonstration, lobby of Parliament and national days of protest against the cuts and fully involve trades councils in moblising for these events.

· Present a clear alternative to the cuts including public ownership, higher rates of tax for the rich, closing corporate tax loopholes and scrapping Trident replacement.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said:

“The TUC has to be the launch-pad for the fight back against the coalition Government’s decision to unleash all out class warfare through their unprecedented attack on our communities, public services, welfare state and transport system. Our defence must be built on generalised strike action and community resistance in the biggest public mobilisation since the anti-poll tax movement.

“RMT is in no doubt that the government is using the deficit as a thinly veiled cover to engage in an ideological dismantling of the state and an attack on workers, and the most vulnerable in our society, which goes far further than even the dark days of Thatcher.

“As well as setting out plans for our own co-ordinated industrial and community action we also send a message of solidarity to our comrades in Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and elsewhere who are fighting similar cuts to jobs, standards of living and public services.”
